Homemade Flax Seed Gel Recipe

Taking a cue from Naptural 85, I ventured to Whole Foods yesterday and bought a tiny baggy of golden flax seeds. It only cost me 12 cents! Once I got home, I got to work in the kitchen. This is officially my third attempt at making flax seed gel. But as they say… the third time is the charm!

Flax seed gel is ideal for…
  • styling mini twists
  • styling wash n gos
  • smoothing edges
  • sealing ends of hair
What does it do?
  • creates soft & shiny hair
  • creates moisturized hair
  • promotes hair growth
  • provides omega 3 for hair
  • gives definition to curls
  • gives hold without “crunchy” hair
  • mixes well with other oils like vit E

What you need:
  • A spoon with a long handle
  • Flax Seeds
  • A measuring cup & measuring spoons
  • A coffee strainer
  • A medium sized pot
  • Vitamin E oil or Tea-tree oil

Recipe Measurements:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 5 ½ tablespoons of flax seeds
  • 4-5 drops of Vitamin E oil or Tea-Tree oil

Recipe Instructions:
Set your coffee strainer right side up into a bowl with a flat bottom. Make sure the coffee strainer is standing, balanced at the bottom of the bowl.

Pour the water into your pot. Turn your stove top to medium high heat. Wait for the water to start a low-boil. Add your flax seeds one ½ tablespoon at a time while stirring lightly with your spoon.
Turn your stove top up to high heat. Continue to stir.

When the flax seeds begin to secrete a clear mucus, turn off your stove top. Pour the pot contents into the coffee strainer that is sitting inside the bowl. The clear mucus should separate itself from the flax seeds and seep through the coffee strainer holes into the bowl. This is your gel.

Wait until all of the gel-like substance has inked through the coffee strainer before removing it from the bowl.
Set the bowl somewhere to cool. Once cooled off, add 4-5 drops of Vitamin E oil or Tea-tree oil as a preservative. Store within your refrigerator when not in use. Gel usually keeps for a week.
